How to Support Your Child’s Emotional Wellbeing

Raising children is one of the most rewarding journeys in life, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. As parents and caregivers, we play an important role in helping children feel safe, loved and understood. Supporting their emotional wellbeing not only helps them feel secure now, but also builds the foundation for lifelong resilience and mental health.

Why emotional wellbeing matters

Children’s emotional wellbeing is closely linked to their ability to grow, learn and form healthy relationships. When children feel secure and valued, they can explore their world with confidence and curiosity. Research shows that early positive experiences with emotions help children build coping skills, empathy and self-esteem, all of which support their mental health throughout life.

5 gentle practices to nurture your child’s wellbeing
  1. Build warm connections
Spend time together, give cuddles, make eye contact, and let your child know they are loved and valued every day.
  2. Help name and understand feelings
Use simple words to describe emotions: “You’re feeling sad. It’s okay to feel that way.” This helps children learn to recognise and manage their emotions.
  3. Create safe routines
Daily rhythms like shared meals, bedtime stories or morning cuddles give children comfort and predictability.
  4. Listen and communicate openly
Be curious about your child’s thoughts and feelings. Ask gentle questions and listen without judgement.
  5. Seek support when needed
Remember that you don’t have to do this alone. Family, friends, educators and professionals can all be part of your child’s support network.
Gentle steps for everyday life

At Confident Kids, we know that children flourish when surrounded by safe, loving relationships. Our educators are trained in the Circle of Security® model, a research-based approach that focuses on building strong, secure bonds between adults and children. This model helps us tune into children’s needs, whether they are reaching out for comfort, or exploring their world with curiosity. By being a steady, reassuring presence, we help children learn that their feelings are understood and their needs will be met. This foundation of trust gives children the confidence to grow, learn and manage life’s ups and downs.

Supporting your child also means caring for yourself. Children thrive when the adults around them feel supported and well. Take time to check in with your own mental health, and reach out for help if you need it. A gentle question to ask yourself today is:

“Am I really okay, and what do I need to feel more supported?”

As we mark R U OK? Day, let’s remember that one simple question can make a world of difference for ourselves, for our children, and for those around us.
